Personal Growth Is A Long And Arduous Journey
Do you want to improve your life? Are you committed to changing your conditions? Many people will answer yes to these questions, though it is my experience very few people are dedicated to improve their life. This is because the work is difficult, unending and filled with setbacks and disappointments. It is often lined with unpleasant emotions and digging up the past to heal and transform our wounds. But there is no other way than doing the difficult work of attending to our personal growth. It cannot happen overnight nor in thirty days, as many books espouse because this is only skimming the surface.
Everything taking place in your life right now, whether unwanted or not, is the accumulation of your thoughts and beliefs. This is empowering for many reasons least of which means you have the power to change your future by redirecting your thoughts. How you feel about this? Does it make you unhappy that your life's conditions result from everything you've ever thought? Whilst I understand you might feel this way, you may also see the power to create new circumstances for your life from this point forward. As I alluded to earlier, personal growth is a long and arduous journey with many setbacks and detours. Those who embark on this journey give up because of the difficulties they face.
I liken it to the Navy Seals BUD/S program where only 20 to 30% of candidates will graduate. The training is extreme and purposefully designed to weed out those not equipped to become Navy Seals. In some respects, personal growth is the same if you're not willing to do the work to improve your life. We cannot expect to do little work on ourselves and be awarded the riches of life, it just doesn't work that way. Read any biography on those who reached the pinnacle of success and you will learn about the struggles they endured. I'm reminded of the quote by the former American football player and coach Lou Holtz who said: "Show me someone who has done something worthwhile, and I'll show you someone who has overcome adversity." He was affirming that adversity builds character and contributes to our growth and development.
What Happens When The Going Gets Tough?
Therefore, to improve the quality of your life, avoid focusing on results but aim to get better instead. The goal is to build on your success while noting areas of improvement. For example, I wrote an article recently where I observed two people talking throughout an entire workshop I attended. Years ago, I would have been angered by their lack of courtesy and let them know about it. Think of those who talk throughout an entire film and ruin it for everyone else. However, I sat with my emotions and noted where I experienced the anger in my body. In the next instance, something unexpected happened. I felt compassion for these two people. I was overcome with a sense of peace and harmony because behind the anger was the realisation that only love exists. To reach this loving and peaceful state, we must first experience the anger, yet many people are quick to act on their emotions which prevents them from reaching love, compassion and inner peace.
Is this beginning to make sense, in that getting better should be our focus instead of wishing our lives were different? Are you willing to do the work no matter what it takes? Obviously you are invested in your personal growth because you are reading this article and maybe even sharing it with family and friends. But what happens when the going gets tough and you hit a hurdle in your personal growth? How do you react? Who do you become? I have encountered many setbacks over the past decade, yet I have experienced enormous growth during these times. Life will present us with the experiences needed for our personal growth when we least expect it. We can embrace the lessons or resist them, however they will continue to show up in a different form until we accept what is taking place.
So for now, I'd like you to give some thought to the areas of your life you want to improve. Write down in your journal/diary or on a piece of paper what you would like to improve about your life. Is it your finances, health, love life, career? Be very specific about what you want. Don't focus on what you don't want in your journaling. Second, what is required to change your circumstances? You might think you need to hire a life coach or invest in an expensive course but sometimes it is simpler than that. It may be as simple as not complaining for the next thirty days. It might require investigating your beliefs and forming new ones. The point is: everything you need to change your life is right at your fingertips. As you move through your personal development, the next resource will be made available to you. Therefore, to improve the quality of your life, stop focusing on results and direct your attention to enhancing the life you're living now.

Being, Doing And Having


When I think of the law of attraction, I think of those three words in the title. In fact, when I think of all auto-suggestion, self-hypnosis and self-convincing, I think of those three words I put into that title, also: Being, doing and having. When a goal is so ingrained in your spirit, soul and mind that it cannot help but come real, it does come down to being, doing and having when really analyzed.
I remember this three-step paradigm that described that process to a tee in this old Frank Rudolph Young book, that described it even better in a short way than many pages of written materials specific to Neurological Mental Control texts or Neuro-Linguistic Programming and self-hypnosis books, it went like this and I will include it here:
Step 1:
(a) Think of whatever goal, dream, or wish you want to come true for about five seconds.
(b) Immediately visualize it as coming true, and maintain that vision for about four seconds.
Step 2:
(a) Think of the goal, dream or wish again for about five seconds. But this time dig deep into your conscious mind for it and drag out its details.
(b) Immediately visualize it again as coming true, and maintain that vision for about four seconds. But visualize it more clearly and completely than before. Let the details fit into it, as if it were actually occurring.
Step 3:
(a) Once more think of that goal, dream or wish for about five seconds. But this time dig so deeply into your mind for it that you extract every possible detail about it.
(b) Immediately visualize it once more as coming true, and maintain that vision for about four seconds. But visualize it so thoroughly in every detail that it seems to "come true" right before your eyes.
I include these steps to simplify my subject and idea into a potent thing that comes down to infinite simplicity, not anything needing "rocket science" or "amazing analysis" to decode. I include Frank Rudolph Young's idea to say that "violently effective goal setting" is not "rocket science", it depends on pure desire and achievement "push" through manipulation of mental energy, spiritual energy and physical energy in that order. In short, that was a fancy way of saying it comes down to being, doing and having and little else. Unless you get more specific about the goal, that is the reality it all comes down to.

Self-hypnosis is all about reprogramming the mind and embedding newer, more favorable beliefs. This form of hypnosis is achieved through a trance like state where your reasoning is turned off. Our reasoning helps us to make important judgment calls that can save ourself and is an integral as well as very necessary component for our livelihood. However, there is a saying that we are our worst critics. Many times, our reasoning is influenced by subconscious beliefs stemming from childhood and whatever traumas we might've experienced in our lives. Our environments and cultures heavily impact our perceptions on certain subjects. These beliefs can either put us at an advantage or limit us.
For instance, let's say you were never encouraged to go to college because your parents believed you were destined to do something more "practical". As an adult, you may still hold onto the apprehension and belief that going to college is quite unrealistic.
This is just one minor example of how our subconscious beliefs can limit us in what we are able to achieve. Thus, one doesn't quite live their lives to the fullest due to such fear or ignorance. However, what if you could implement healthier belief systems into your mind that will allow you to believe that anything is possible? Well, this is possible through self-hypnosis.
What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy or self-hypnosis is a means of reprogramming the mind and how we think. It is especially beneficial to those with addictive behaviors or anyone who needs help kicking bad habits as well as establishing healthier routines. Self-hypnosis is done through a self-induced hypnotic state where the mind is not as active as it would be in its normal "problem solving" mode. The subconscious mind is much more accessible in this state of hypnosis for self-suggestion.
What is Auto-suggestion?
Auto-suggestion is a psychological method used to convince the subconscious mind of certain ideas that will effectively change one's behavior as a result of repetitive verbal statements. It works somewhat like a placebo as one must believe it will work in order for it to work. This can be difficult to do if not in a deep relaxed and hypnotic state.
How Does the Subconscious Mind Operate?
The subconscious mind absorbs all kinds of information whether you think it is pertinent or not. Self-hypnosis is not quite like meditation as meditation mainly aims at establishing self-awareness in the present moment. Self-hypnosis requires that one be in a trance-like state or unconscious for the suggestions to be effective. It is also used to better one's self in a certain area of their lives such as work, relationships, mental health, eating habits, etc.
Repetition is one of the tools used to implement habits as well as get rid of them. When you do or say something repeatedly, it almost becomes second nature or an actual reality of yours. All of this exposure can either reinforce your perceptions negatively or positively. Luckily, with self-hypnosis, you can bypass the reasoning of the conscious mind.
You may try to believe that you are rich. However, there is that little voice in the back of your head that will tell you that you are not rich. This is why some people have very little luck using affirmations. Their subconscious mind still holds negative beliefs that conflict with whatever they are trying to convince themselves of. Self-hypnosis is like a direct line to the subconscious that gives you the right exposure.
How to Perform Self-Hypnosis
There are many ways to induce a trance like state and perform self-hypnosis. The following way incorporates some mindfulness meditation which helps stabilize any arising thoughts that present themselves.
1. Find a comfortable place to lay down or sit up.
2. Get in a comfortable position as you will likely be in this position anywhere for 15 minutes to an hour.
3. Close your eyes and focus on breathing slowly and deeply.
4. If any thoughts arise, observe them. Do not judge them as this will just reinforce them. Also, don't force these thoughts away as that will just create more tension.
5. After observing each arising thought, refocus your attention back towards your breathing.
6. Once you feel as though you have achieved a deep, relaxed state.
7. Focus on your goal or objective. (e.g. I want to lose 10lbs)
8. Visualize yourself exercising and eating healthy and speak affirmations that help create this vision (e.g. I will shed the weight with ease.)
9. Continue visualizing by feeling the excitement of losing the weight as if you are your ideal weight.
10. Say statements that reinforce this idea. (I now feel 10lbs lighter.)
11. Take a few moments to feel the emotion and gratitude of the hypnosis and gradually come back to your full awareness.

Many people deal with self-degrading perceptions of themselves and insecurities that prevent them from going after the things they want in life. Perhaps they do not feel good enough or deserving. Self-hypnosis will help you improve your value as you establish your self-worth. Others will be able to see how much you value yourself and will act in accordance to the new you.
